ArchivalResource

Elisha B. Perkins legal correspondence, 1816-1828.

Correspondence between Elisha B. Perkins, a Pomfret, Connecticut, lawyer and various individuals and companies involved in a court case against Charles H. Hall of New York City. The charges were for "book debt", although there are several mentions of robbery and stealing cargoes from ships. The case was brought to the Superior Court in Connecticut by Samuel Williams. Correspondents include F.W. Saltonstall, Timothy Williams, Peter Remsen & Co. of New York, Seth Staples and Benjamin Nichols. The final letter in the collection indicates the case was settled out of court, but not before numerous depositions were taken, and a legal ruling on bankruptcy came from a lawyer in Cadiz, Spain, where Charles Hall's brother John lived and worked. Not related to the case, but written by Perkins, is a questionnaire sent to determine the state of schools in Pomfret.
